Christopher Liu was born into a medical family in Hong Kong and decided to become an eye surgeon when he became short-sighted aged 13 .he left Hong Kong for boarding school in the West Country and medical school in London. He then received ophthalmology training at Charring Cross, western Ophthalmic, and Moorfield Eye hospitals and entered Higher Surgical training in East Anglia at Addenbrooke’s and West Norwich Hospitals. He also traveled to Rome frequently in the 1990s to learn Osteo –Odonto – Keratoprosthesis from the late professor Giancarlo Falcinelli.
Christopher has over 200 publications in the ophthalmic scientific literature and numerous book chapters.He is an examiner, council member and trustee at the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and helped modernize the Medical contact lens and Ocular Surface Association, the British Society for Refractive Surgeons.He was Appointed OBE for Services to Ophthalmology in the 2018 New Year Honors list.
In his inaugural lecture, he will discuss regulation of refractive surgery, artificial cornea, and effective delivery and patient safety in cataract surgery. These are areas of ophthalmology he wishes to pursue for the rest of his professional life
